![]() ![]() The last time I had one in my hands a few years ago I was quoted £50,000, so let's call the back-of-the-envelope $75,000.įor my money, I think I'd rather have a really nice Becker Sr (and maybe an extra $10k in my pocket). I also didn't have time to really put them through a battery of tests I would want to if I was in the position to buy one. I rank them among the top tier of modern violins, though there are a few elusive makers whose works I have not tried. Whether or not they can replicate the secrets of the masters consistently.who can say? The best makers I've talked to seem to agree that any mere dimensional copy is not sufficient to create a great instrument, so they must have some secret sauce that doesn't appear on their marketing materials. The maker of mine got his experience with Cremonese instruments via a really good relationship with one of the curators of the Library of Congress. Many of the great modern makers spend a lot of time among instruments of that caliber. Yes, they are very great bench copies, since they have access to such a wide variety of instruments. You'll rapidly discover if you can't blend, or if you can't project. speed.īut this is why it's critical to try out an instrument in all the circumstances in which you'll be using it. The best instruments will react accordingly, responding very differently to weight vs. Whereas for soloists, a weightier, denser, slower-bow-speed sound is typically used to drive projection. The ideal orchestral sound of a professional player (and arguably amateurs and students, too) has an airier quality that is accomplished through more bow speed and less weight on the string. Some violins just have a lot of penetrating projection, and you've basically got to put all air into your sound - fingerboard, tilted for a tiny bit of hair, and quicker bow speed - in order to avoid having your sound carry over everyone else. The instrument has two modes, "off" and "loud". So it can be really hard to get orchestral-pp entrances that emerge seamlessly from the mists, so to speak. Some contemporary violins (and some violins in general) are a little hard to get started - there's significant impedance to getting the string resonating. Now that I think about it more, there are really multiple aspects to blending. Thanks to hogit for the r/violinist old Reddit logo!
